What is the Gospel?

In the Bible Belt, we often take for granted some of the words heard on a regular basis by mentally categorizing them as merely church lingo.

This is unfortunate, as many of these words are chock full of spiritual sustenance that ought to permeate our lives.

My desire is that we would pause for a moment to consider the full weight of one word in particular that contains the full weight of the Christian faith, which is also perhaps the word most victim to this offensive apathy in our Southern culture.

The word "gospel" is derived from the Greek word "euaggelion" which is defined by Strong's Concordance as "the good news of the coming of the Messiah, the gospel."

It is used 101 times throughout Scripture.

This gospel, or good news, is the point of all history and all Scripture. It is so beautifully etched in the pages of history, pointed forward to in the Old Testament and fulfilled in the New Testament.

Below I have listed several verses that summarize this sweet, blessed good news.

1 Corinthians 15:1-4: "Now I would remind you, brothers,of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,"

Romans 5:8: "God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Romans 6:23: "The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Romans 8:1: "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."

Romans 8:32: "He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?"

2 Corinthians 5:21: "For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God."

2 Corinthians 8:9: "You know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich."

1 Timothy 1:15: "The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost."

1 John 4:10: "In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins."

Revelation 5:9: “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.”
